Location: East Newark sits in Hudson County on the east bank of the Passaic River. Harrison borders the Borough to the south and east, Kearny is immediately north, and the City of Newark lies directly across the river in Essex County.

Industry, Thread Mills & the Birth of the Borough
East Newark's history is inseparable from the huge thread mills that once dominated the Passaic River waterfront. The industrial tax base and workforce were central to both the Borough's growth and its 1895 separation from Kearny.
1870sThread Industry ExpandsClark Thread Company expanded its manufacturing operation into East Newark, joining the Mile End Spool and Cotton Company in making the small area an important textile center.
July 3, 1895East Newark Is EstablishedResidents of the lower end of Kearny voted to form a separate municipality, creating the Borough of East Newark.
